What type of sinker should i use when fishing off a pier?

completely depends on how deep the water is and how big of fish you are trying to catch. i cannot help you at all withoout this information.
you want to use a real heavy sinker the 1-2 oz shold do it. you want a big sinker because you will be fishing off the bottom and the oceans current will pick up anything too lite. ive fished off myrtle beach in s.c. off a pier and we always use a large pyramid shaped sinker at the bottom with a hook a foot off the bottom. trust me use a large sinker it will be easier to cast, easier to tell if a fish is biting, and worst of all if your not happy switch to a smaller size. have fun, good luck!
well i cant help about the sinker matter it depends how rough the water is, i’ve always fished with the lightest sinker possible. and definately live would be better, frozen bait falls off the hook quite quickly
I have fished off of several of Galveston’s piers. I am assuming you will be on one of the piers or jetties near the shoreline near the Flagship?. Seawolf Park area has some nice areas to fish as well. Fishing off the pier near the surf, use enough weight to just keep your rigging down. To much weight and you will find yourself missing bites. If you get some live shrimp then use a popping cork and catch some specks in the early morning feeding near the top. My friends have been catching nice specks in Galveston Bay, San-Luis Pass and Christmas Bay areas, so I’m sure they are all in the surf as well. While fishing off the pier area or on the jetties there, remember when you want to reel in to check your bait or something, put your rod tip high in the air and reel in as fast as you can. Lot’s of hang-ups around those areas and I have lost my share of tackle fishing them. Feel free to email me for info of the area. 40yr exp
I wouldn’t have a clue where Galveston is, i think i’ve heard of it. I’m from Australia. Depends really what the tide or flow is like. A heavy pyramid sinker will certainly be advantageous to hold the bait at the bottom but they are generally used for surf fishing. Plus it makes it harder to tell bites and takes away a bit of the fun from catching smaller fish.
Ball sinkers are pretty versitile sinkers.
But my preference if you can get your hands on them, are the bomb sinkers / dipsey or bank sinkers. These are the longer round shaped sinker with a swivel coming out of the end.
