Judgerz asked:

Can I have links to sites and books please? I’m researching for a story.

Also I need to know, when is rabbit season and can a non-AKC dog participate in the trials? More specifically I’m working with beagles and rabbit hunting. And I need to know how you first train to hunt alone and then how you would train if another dog was introduced to make a pair. Thank you!

This is a question taylor made for Tom L, THE authority on that subject. I will star it and he will hopefully answer it for you, I saw him around earlier!!

Non reigstered dogs can compete in hunt trials if they have an ILP registration with AKC. They can eearn and hold titles.

I train upland bird dogs and do not have any practical knowledge working with Beagles.
I know they hunt them as packs and they are awsome hunters but not much more than that.

You should be able to find out much of the info you need at
And also some links to parent clubs and hunt clubs that participate or sponser field trials.

even if you don’t have a LIP with the AKC go ahead and call them and ask the local club they may have a someone that you maybe able to hook up with and help you out and if the club is laid back and small they may be able to let you join and allow you to train along with their team even if you cant go up the ranks and compete you have nothing to lose but call and ask,

will send you a free rulebook for the trials. There are some books on training field dogs – look on

Be aware that you and your dog could get Lyme disease, Rocky mountain spotted fever, etc if you go traipsing off through the woods unprepared for ticks!
